At the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak, the world seemed to press the pause button, and many people’s daily lives were the same, including mine. Suddenly, I found myself with much more time for self-reflection, which made me realize the importance of having a healthy body. In considering an exercise routine that could maintain a certain quality and posture, I began strength training and Pilates.
Maintaining a practice once a week, I gradually felt the benefits that came from it. From the alignment of the body, starting positions, breath control, movement patterns, to engaging the correct muscles, and testing the body’s stability and coordination, each element is interconnected. It requires focus and awareness of oneself to complete the practice with intention.
While “no pain, no gain” may be a motto that many use to motivate themselves in exercise, I believe “How you sow is how you reap” better describes my mindset during practice. I embrace and accept my shortcomings, trying to use the practice to control and elevate myself to the desired state. There’s no right or wrong in the process, just what’s suitable for you.
As Joseph Pilates, the founder and promoter of Pilates, once said, “After 10 sessions, you will feel the difference; after 20 sessions, you will see the difference; after 30 sessions, you will have a new body.” I hope to guide everyone through each practice to experience the wonders of Pilates.
